5 Shocking Stats about Millennials
Happy Friday! We are doing it a little different today. Every generation can claim that they had it the hardest. We've had many crazy and horrifying events transpire over the last 100 years and I'm not one to claim that one generation had it worse than another.
What I can say is that as millennials, we've experienced several once in a lifetime events in the span of a few decades.
Here's a few:
Dot Com Burst
9/11
Housing Crash/Great Recession
War (20+ years)
COVID
Inflation (40 year high)
Again, I know that we aren't the only generation affected by these events though many of these events occurred during pivotal times in our lives/as we entered adulthood.
In today's episode, we are going to discuss five statistics about our generation.
This content is from an article I found titled, "5 Shocking Statistics About Real Millennial Problems" by Paul Angone. Check out the article HERE.
5 Problems Facing Millennials
Problem 1. Millennials Are the Most Educated Generation, EVER
Being educated is always good, isn't it? Just like supply and demand, the more of something that there is in the market, the less value that it can hold. Think of this like college degrees. So many of us went to college to get degrees, that they no longer make us as "special" as they once did.
So many people have them so we must find other ways to set ourselves apart from the competition when looking for jobs. Degrees are still helpful, but they don't automatically open the door like they once did.
Problem 2. 40% of Unemployed are Millennials
We can't get jobs! We've had at least one recession and perhaps are heading for another one (depending on who you ask). Not only are things much more expensive then when our parents were our age, it's hard to find a job!
Problem 3. Student Loans
Many of us had to take out loans to pay for our degrees. Most of our parents who went to college graduated with a nice salary in a secure job waiting for them. Things were cheap and there was enough money left over to do other things like buy a house, have some kids and do fun stuff every once in a while. The average college debt for millennials is $33K. In addition to trying to afford an adult life, we also have a required monthly payment to the government resulting from 4 years or school that got us a job that doesn't pay the bills.
Problem 4. Anxiety
I'm stressed out just writing this newsletter. Millennials report having the highest levels of anxiety and stress of any generation at the same age. I think money plays a role in this (see above) and mixed in with social media and some generational trauma, things are just plain stressful.
Problem 5. Who Needs Kids?
Millennials are having kids at an average age of 30 years old. Compared to historical averages, that's old! My wife and I were an anomaly, having three before 30 but with life being so stressful and expensive, many of us want to make sure we are settled down and in a secure position before we make such a large life decision.
Motivation/Closing
This episode was not meant as a forum to complain. I am saying these things because this is what we are faced with, perhaps even the hand that were were dealt.
