Blink is Back!
A Brief Blink History, Part II
Reunited and it Feels So Good
On October 11, 2022, Blink-182 announced that the original (kinda) three members of the band are reuniting for a world tour and album. Tom DeLonge, Mark Hoppus and Travis Barker are back together with promises of the old-school blink music that we all love.
A Brief History
We left off last week sometime in 1997 with the release of Dammit, from the Dude Ranch album. They also released the single Josie in November 1998. In my opinion, this is a totally underrated and forgotten song.
From 1997-1998, the band toured for a consecutive 9 months. That amount of time on the road, away from home and family caused a lot of tension in the band and was the reason that Raynor ended up leaving the band. blink looked for a new drummer to fill in and turned to the band, Aquabats. Travis Barker joined the tour and learned all of the drum tracks in 45 minutes. Insane. Josie was the first recorded song to include Barker and he officially joined the band in the summer of 1998.
In late 1998, the band was back in the studio to record their third album with legendary producer Jerry Finn. Enema of the State was recorded over a 3 month period and released on June 1, 1999. The album produced three singles, What's My Age Again, All the Small Things and Adam's Song. All three songs were wildly successful and received radio play and were featured on Total Request Live (TRL). The album hit the #9 spot on the Billboard 200.
Of course, there was a tour involved in promoting the new album and the band made some cameos in shows and movies. Remember them in American Pie?
Next, blink began working on their fourth album, titled Take off Your Pants and Jacket. There were a lot of mixed emotions around the creation of this album. Mark and Tom wanted to creatively take it in different directions and this may be the first time the band started not getting along. Regardless, the band wrote and recorded the songs and released three singles, The Rock Show, First Date and Stay Together For The Kids. This is my favorite blink album, by the way and The Rock Show is one of my all time favorite songs. The album hit the #1 spot on the Billboard 200.
There was another tour (are you seeing a theme here?) as the band travelled all over the world to promote the album. Around this time, Tom and Travis began messing around with musical side projects and feelings in the band became more contentious...
That's it for today, be on the lookout for Part III in the near future!
