Calling All Misfits
The Struggle is Real
I've been trying to think of the most perfect and eloquent newsletter to send you. The name, the topic, the content, the whole nine yards. I've been thinking about it for days. Days turned into weeks. So WTF am I doing here?
So WTF Is This?
I work in a very structured job. One that I love but does not always allow me to be creative and express myself. As I looked for a creative outlet, I kept asking myself, "What are some things I'm passionate about?"
I like doing lots of things, but I don't love doing many things. Sad, huh? Maybe you can relate?
As I take a look at what's going on in the world, I can't help but notice that our generation, Millennials, have been in a tough spot. The dot com bubble burst, 9/11, two wars, the housing crash, COVID and now inflation. Almost all of these events have occurred during our "coming of age years."
Sucks, doesn't it?
We don't have the luxury of inheriting a booming economy or living in a peaceful world. It's not as easy to support a family of 5 with a single, blue-collar income. We are fighting for everything that we can get to support ourselves and our families. It's hard, tiring and stressful.
A misfit is defined as "a person whose behavior or attitude sets them apart from others in an uncomfortably conspicuous way."
As far as growing up and trying to live a happy life, the Millennial generation is a bunch of misfits. The Boomers tell us to work harder and stop complaining, Gen Xers say, "Whatever," and Gen Z thinks we're old. Though we are the largest generation, we're in this weird, sort-of in between limbo.
For these reasons, we are the misfits. We're united around trauma, stress and uncertainty.
But it's not all doom and gloom. We have a lot of positives. We remember a life pre-internet and social media. We grew up playing outside and watching Nickelodeon. We went to Warped Tour. Some of us were Emo while some of us popped our collars. Some of us still wear skinny jeans. We had some amazing movies and even better music. We invented avocado toast.
While our generation may be one that feels alone, I assure you that we are all in this together and despite a few differences, we are a generation united in making the world a better place.
Hold on misfits, we're going to go through all the emotions of being a millennial with each issue of this newsletter. Until next time, the struggle is real but you got this.
