Why Am I Doing This

Figuring Out My Why

What Do You Want To Be When You Grow Up?

Nearing 35 years old, I still have no idea how to answer this question. Throughout my life, I've discovered many things that I don't want to do. It's actually easier to name things I dislike than what I actually like. Do you feel the same way?

While complaining about it may temporarily make me feel good, it's not helping move anything forward. So here's what I'm doing about it.

Trying EVERYTHING

As I search for what I want to do, I'm trying just about everything in which I have an interest. Some things I've tried and how it went:

Podcasting

The Good. I loved talking to all sorts of people and constantly hearing myself speak transformed me into an exceptional speaker

The Bad. Podcasting had me rely on outside factors i.e. others' schedules and availability. I was doing interviews at times I didn't want to just for the sake of getting guests on the show. I also became very bored with the constant audio editing. A 30 minute episode took about 60+ minutes of editing. And don't forget about all the marketing for it

Writing A Book

The Good. I enjoyed the writing process. It helped me learn a lot about myself and it was really neat to see the first draft get sculpted into a finished product. I'm looking to use my book as a "business card" in that if people want to know what I stand for, they can read about it in my book.

The Bad. Self-publishing means that I had to do it all on my own, including selling it. It's likely not going to make me rich or famous, which is totally fine, but the proverbial "juice for the squeeze" is likely to be low.

Creating a Course

The Good. I made a free email course entitled "Millennial Parenting, The Struggle Is Real" on Gumroad just to see what would happen. I'm looking for evergreen ways to increase my cash flow and found a unique and very Millennial Way to talk about parenting. It was pretty quick and easy to do, too.

The Bad. There are TONS of courses out there on the internet, why should someone take mine? I haven't gotten too much traction on it but that's likely because not many have seen it. In order to get people to take your classes, it helps if a lot of people know about you and what you're doing. I'm simply not there yet.

Newsletter

The Good. When I was writing Shut Up and Lead, a newsletter helped me organize my thoughts and get feedback of those around me. Substack makes it easy to do and my offering premium content for a subscription price, it helped me pay for my editor.

The Bad. I love talking about leadership but it's too serious and with my job, I live it every single day. It doesn't give me a creative outlet and allow the left side of my brain to get some love.

What I'm Focusing On

I am making this newsletter, so you can see what I'm going through and the mental hurdles that I overcome. If I can figure it out and do it, so can you.

I am looking for ways to sell premium content through my newsletter(s), specifically the one on Substack right now. Once I get an income of $15 per month, I am going to pay for Convertkit's Creator plan that allows me to create automated email and drip campaigns.

From there, I am going to go HARD into creating courses. I am going to bulk up my Millennial Parenting Course, sell a course to help people write a book and maybe even do an intro to how to learn the piano (I'm a music nut, if I haven't said that already.)
