Windows 95

It's Been 27 Years!

An August Summer Day

It was an early Fall day in Redmond, WA in the late summer. Temperatures just touching 70 degrees. It was a day that changed the technological landscape for the world. A day that altered how many would use computers forever.

About 27 years ago, Microsoft released Windows 95. I remember growing up with this operating system as a kid but not knowing why it was such a big deal for the time.

Why It Was a Big Deal

Up until this point, the main operating system was MS-DOS (Microsoft Disk Operating System). It looked something like this:

It was a black screen in which you had to enter commands for what you wanted to do. Wanted to play a game from a CD? You had to enter the text to tell the computer to look to the CD drive and open the files from the CD. (I think that's how it worked, anyways).

The command looked something like this: CD [/D] [drive:][path].

Lots of fun...

Changing the Game

Windows 95 changed Microsoft products from a text based system to more of a graphical interface. What does this mean?

Using the "mouse," users could see, point and click at what they wanted to do. Windows 95 was made to be plug and play. You could adjust it to work for your needs, cutting edge at the time.

Windows 95 allowed people to use the PC for their every day tasks. It was easy to check emails, browse the internet or play games.

Additionally, this was the first time that the Start Button and Taskbar were introduced, two features that most of us still use today.

I remember browsing the internet for the first time on Netscape Navigator thinking to myself, "This is such a pain, when am I EVER going to use this?"

Yet here we are...
